    Services held for retired school teacher Thekla Mutchler, 84

    Funeral services for Thekla O. Mutchler, 84, were Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis.
    Pastor Jack Whetzel conducted the services. Burial was in the Bear Butte cemetery with arrangements by the F. O. Jolley Funeral Home of Sturgis.
    A memorial has been established to the Sturgis Community Nursing Home. She died Thursday evening at the Sturgis Community Nursing Home.
    Thekla Mutchler was born Apr. 15, 1900, at Yankton to Peter and Selma Paulson. She lived at Bonesteel until she was 6-years-old, when she began living with Jim and Dora Brown.

    In 1909, they moved to Fairpoint in Meade County. She attended Newell High School and Black Hills State College at Spearfish. May 26, 1923, she married Tommy Olson at Sturgis. The couple moved to a ranch near Cedar Canyon. She taught at various schools in rural Meade and Perkins counties.
    In 1946, she moved to Sturgis and taught primary grades at Whitewood for 10 years. On May 19, 1951, she married John Mutchler in Rapid City. She continued to teach for the Meade school district and retired in 1962 after 39 1/2 years of teaching.
    Mutchler had lived at the nursing home since July 1980. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, past president of the South Dakota Education Association, Sturgis Senior Citizens, and various educational organizations.
    Surviving are her husband, John Mutchler, Sturgis; two daughters, Mrs. Ida Hull, Rapid City; and Mrs. Roger (Alva) Stone, Sturgis; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Helen Miller**, Sturgis; and Mrs. Joyce Mills, Rapid City; three stepsons, Harold Mutchler, Cheyenne, Wy; Erven Mutchler, Carlin, WY; and Bob Mutchler,
    (town unreadable), WA; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren
    and step-great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by one sister and a half-sister.

    RAPID CITY - Ida Ellen Hull, 83, Rapid City, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at her residence.

    Ida was born Oct. 28, 1926, to Tommy and Tech Olson. She attended Squaw Butte and Sulphur grade schools as well as Sturgis High School in Meade County.

    Ida married Wayne Lang in June, 1942, and moved to the Lang Ranch near Bixby, S.D. They later sold the ranch and moved to Faith, S.D. Ida and Wayne divorced in 1955, and she relocated to Rapid City. She enrolled and graduated from Black Hills Beauty College. She married Tom Birdsong in 1956 and moved to Sturgis and worked at Bea's Beauty Salon while her husband was overseas. Later Ida married Ergo Hull in 1959, and they purchased Doc's Sunny Side Motel in Deadwood. They sold the motel in 1971 and moved to Rapid City. Ida worked as a beautician most of her life.

    Ida is survived by her sons, Ergo "Butch" Hull and Kevin Hull, both of Rapid City; her six grandchildren, Melinda, Eric and Mandy, all of Denver, Easton of Florida, Dustin of Rapid City, and Ashley of Rapid City; and two sisters, Alva Stone, Sioux Falls, and Edyth Olson, Sturgis.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Ergo Hull; and son, Tom Birdsong.

    Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with Pastor Brent Woodard officiating.

    Tom Birdsong obituary

    RAPID CITY - Tom Birdsong, 54, Rapid City, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

    Tom was born May 22, 1955 in Sturgis to Tom and Ida Birdsong. The family moved to Rapid City where Tom attended High School. He then moved to Texas where he worked at Texas Nuclear and where he met his then wife Sherry. They had a son, Easton after moving to Colorado where they resided until 2005. Tom then moved back to Rapid City to be closer to family.

    Tom enjoyed the outdoors, spending time rock climbing and hiking with Easton.

    Survivors include his son, Easton Birdsong, Jacksonville, FL; his mother, Ida Hull, Rapid City; two brothers, Butch and Kevin Hull (both from Rapid City); as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

    Memorial services were held Friday, Aug. 14, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City. Friends may sign Tom's online guestbook at www.kirkfuneralhome.com.
